Desensitization

Desensitization is done in the cases of dentin hypersensitivity which is a painful condition if left untreated. It can be caused due to various reasons including: cavity, attrition and abrasion of the tooth, Prevalence of dentin hypersensitivity in adult populations range from 8-30% with the majority of sufferers between 25-45 years of age. At Reliance Dental, we can desensitize the area with the use of desensitizing agents applied with a fine brush. If a patient is experiencing more than a mild sensitivity to temperature extremes or sweets, and the dentist has ruled out pulpits (inflamed tooth pulp), cavity, infection, or gum disease as a cause, desensitizing medications may be used to seal the microscopic pores of exposed root surfaces.

These  agents are also used on freshly cut dentin during restorative dental procedures (e.g. fillings, crowns) before the restoration is placed on the tooth to help prevent post-operative tooth sensitivity.
